Heroku’s Polyglot Platform Now Supports the Powerful Scala Programming Language for Today’s Cloud Applications
SAN FRANCISCO, CA, — Typesafe, the Scala company, has partnered with Heroku in a collaboration to add Scala support to the Heroku platform. Heroku is the leading open Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provider, and a Salesforce.com company.
Created by Typesafe co-founder Martin Odersky, Scala is a modern programming language designed for today’s multicore hardware architectures and cloud computing workloads. Because it runs on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), Scala offers complete interoperability with Java. Scala has a rapidly growing community of users and contributors, and is proven in production with some of the world’s most highly trafficked web properties, including Foursquare, LinkedIn and Twitter.
"Developers can now write their apps in Scala and deploy them instantly to the world’s most scalable cloud application platform," said Adam Wiggins, Heroku co-founder and CTO. "The Scala programming language, Typesafe’s Akka middleware, and Heroku’s platform are a powerful combination for developers building and delivering the next generation of applications and services on the web."
"Scala is well suited for cloud computing applications," said Martin Odersky, Chairman and Chief Architect of Typesafe and the creator of Scala. "Its unique integration of object-oriented and functional language features makes it a scalable and productive way to code for cloud environments like Heroku."
Heroku was founded in 2007 by application developers for application developers, with the goal of making the deployment and management of next-generation cloud apps as easy as their development. The application platform features a workflow and interface designed around how developers work. Because the platform is a service, there are no virtual machines to manage, no software to install, and no hardware to manage.
