Cloud Computing in Plain English, a New Guide

September 21, 2011 by Vera Lang

Now reading… "Navigating through the Cloud: A plain English guide to surviving the risks, costs and governance pitfalls of Cloud computing" by Rob Livingstone.

Other than the kindle version, who in the tech world would like to read a book about cloud computing? There are about a ‘000 website covering the topic from all angles.

However, Rob might be providing just what is needed. A handy guide for executives to make some sense of it all, with tech talk, with cloud computer hype of any kind.

Australian Author Rob Livingstone has been such an executive (CIO) for 33 years and could not find a clear and overview of what’s important to know when it comes to cloud computing. So, he wrote one himself.

Navigating through the Cloud

What is particularly neat about Rob’s book from a management point of view is that he offers several assessment frameworks that allow companies to determine benefits, costs, and risks of cloud computing for their respective organizations. Livingstone aims to help companies realize the value of Cloud by avoiding the real and hidden pitfalls.

These are classic business frameworks that most executives will feel comfortable with working through. There’s no tech talk to be found in this book. Livingston has real-world experience in the design, implementation and management of Cloud technologies, which makes this book practical.

It’s starts at the beginning with ‘what is cloud computing?’ and then goes on to explain how does (or could) cloud computing work, for you.

It should be noted that this book is focused on Software as a Service (SaaS/the Public Cloud/software on-demand), i.e. you pay for what you use through a regular subscription service, and the software is accessed over the Internet. Your own nothing, except the data you load into the system. The reason that this is the focus of the book, Livingstone points out, is that SaaS is where the majority of risk, complexity, cost and governance issues reside. In Paperback and Kindle format.

Livingstone aims to address all companies and to insightfully and professionally reveal the kinds of issues that you are likely to face in adopting Cloud technologies in your company, whether that be small, mid-market or multinational.
